Questions

Do roofers need a license in Texas?

No. Texas has no state licence for roofing contractors, so you have to check other things instead.

Texas is one of the states that does not license roofing contractors. There is no state exam, no state registration and no state body you can check a roofer against. The Roofing Contractors Association of Texas runs a voluntary licensing programme, and some cities require roofers to register locally, but a roofer with neither is not breaking any law.

That puts the checking on you. The things that actually matter: a physical address in the area and a track record you can verify, general liability insurance and workers' compensation with a certificate you can read, references from jobs in your town, a written contract with the scope, the materials by name and the warranty terms, and the manufacturer's own warranty on the shingles alongside the contractor's warranty on the work.

The warning signs are the mirror image: a truck with out-of-state plates after a storm, a cash deal, an offer to cover your insurance deductible, a demand for full payment up front, and no written contract. The reason this site connects you with one contractor working in your town rather than whoever is available is precisely that, in an unlicensed trade, the person's standing locally is the thing you are relying on.
